Economic Opportunity and Child Poverty in MA: What's Working and How We Could Do Better The number of children living in poverty in Massachusetts would be twice as high if low income families did not receive help from effective anti-poverty programs such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly called food stamps), WIC nutrition programs, and the Child Tax Credit. Together these programs help lift 1 in 7 children in Massachusetts out of poverty. Yet, another 1 in 7 children still live in poverty in Massachusetts. These findings are detailed in a study released today, Measuring Access to Opportunity in the United States, by the Annie E. Casey Foundation's national KIDS COUNT project of which MassBudget's KIDS COUNT project is the state affiliate.  To provide an overview of what's working, what's holding back progress, and how to fix what's broken, MassBudget created the infographic below. EMC Newsletter Features the Pantry in Giving Back Article

The Franklin Food Pantry was recently featured in an article, “Employees Give Back,” in one of EMC’s employee newsletters. In the Q1-2015 issue of WISE (Workplace Innovation for Success and Excellence), the article was included in a larger spread about the many ways that EMC gives back to the community. 

The newsletter is printed and distributed to employees at the Franklin manufacturing plant, and is also available to employees around the world via EMC’s intranet website. 

We are thankful to EMC for all of their support throughout the year, and for helping us inform others about the importance of hunger relief and our mission.

Food and non-food donations can be placed in the bin by our front door at 43 West Central St. Please be mindful of what you leave given the weather conditions.

Your Greater Boston Food Bank Update: Braving the Cold and Buried in Snow

Follow GBFB on    New England winters are always more difficult for those in need. The cold results in higher energy costs, making it difficult to keep up with bills to stay warm and to buy enough nutritious food to stay healthy. This winter has brought frigid temperatures, unprecedented volumes of snow and more complications for all. At The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), we are busy working around snow storms to ensure we can keep up. We are grateful for your dedication, and your continued support is needed more than ever so we can help our neighbors in need through this rough winter. Learn how you can help to End Hunger Here. Each year, GBFB and its network of supporters raise our voices to advocate for increased Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program (MEFAP) funding. In 2014, MEFAP funds provided more than 16 million meals, or 12% of all meals provided. This year, the Food Bank Coalition of Massachusetts (The Greater Boston Food Bank, The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Worcester County Food Bank and Merrimack Valley Food Bank) is advocating for an increase in MEFAP funding to $20 million, which could enable GBFB to provide another 7 million meals. The survey results will provide insights on how to improve our messaging focus to better serve our community and to support our mission to End Hunger Here. Super Hunger Brunch 2015 On January 24 and 25, GBFB and restaurants around Boston hosted the 32nd Super Hunger Brunch. Thank you to all who joined us to Brunch for a Cause. Food Pantry now open

With the schools open today (Feb 10th), the Food Pantry returns to 'normal' operation.

Please be careful moving about town, the roads are narrow and the sidewalks not yet cleared.

school buses will be rolling this morning with schools re-opening

Food Pantry Closed - Tuesday/Wednesday (Jan 27-28)

As is our practice, we follow the lead on what the Town of Franklin does for weather emergencies. The School notification was just received (see below).

A message from FRANKLIN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT

Hello 

Based on direction from our public safety officials all schools will be closed on Tuesday 1/27 and Wednesday 1/28. 

There will be no school activities Monday 1/26, Tuesday 1/27 or Wednesday 1/28. 

All School buildings will be closed during this time. Town Hall will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday as well. 

There will be no Recreation programs nor evening basketball. 

We wanted to convey the information early so families may make plans. 

The HS schedule of exams will be disseminated by the HS administration.
