Food_Revolution_Day

Hello Food Revolutionary!
We have some exciting news to share with you.

As a signatory of Jamie Oliver's first Food Revolution petition, we wanted to reach out and update you on this petition and Food Revolution Day 2015.

AN INCREDIBLE 812,000 of you signed the 2010/11 petition to stand up for our united belief that kids need better food at school and better health prospects - THANK YOU! We're so grateful for your support, and delighted you all agree action needs to be taken.

YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE. With your support, this uprising led to a truly global movement, with the launch of Food Revolution Day in 2012. The same year the Ambassador Programme was also launched -  a growing group of thousands of passionate volunteers in over 100 countries. It has also grown an active, empowered and noisy community online and put pressure on leaders who can help us create positive change and begin to reverse the obesity epidemic through improved food education, food quality and security.

While the Food Revolution has continued to grow, we've still got work to do. With 42 million children across the world under the age of five either overweight or obese, the next generation will live shorter lives than their parents if nothing is done to rectify these alarming statistics. That's why for this Food Revolution Day Jamie has launched a global petition calling on leaders and governments of the G20 to make practical food education compulsory at school.

It's essential that we arm future generations with the life skills they urgently need in order to lead healthier, happier, more productive lives and we passionately believe that it is every child's human right. Food education will make a difference to the lives of the next generation. So please continue your support by signing this petition and sharing change.org/jamieoliver on facebook and twitter to help spread the word, we can't do it without you.

We've already gathered an amazing 600,000 signatures from over 160 countries, but to create a movement powerful enough to force all G20 governments to take action, we need to get to millions!

Thank you very much for your support.

"what these individuals needed more than coats were jobs"

Veronika is doing good things for the folks in Detroit.

Veronika Scott was a product design student in Detroit when she invented a water-resistant and self-heating coat that transforms into a sleeping bag for the homeless. After spending months at local homeless shelters, Veronika discovered that what these individuals needed more than coats were jobs, and so began The Empowerment Plan. Today, the non-profit employs homeless women, teaching them skills that empower them to take their lives back while creating a product for a community they were once a part of.

Like Veronika, the Franklin Food Pantry is looking to do more. With the mobile pantry, we make it easier for some of our clients to get the food they need. We also hold cooking classes to help develop a healthier life style.

If you would like to help the Food Pantry, you can sign up to volunteer in any number of ways. You can also make a taxable contribution securely online.

What does 2,000 calories look like? (video)

Inspired by a post on WiseGeek, this Buzzfeed video set out to see how far 2,000 calories actually goes when you eat, say, only carrots or M&Ms. If you're worrying that these "meals" just don't look like that much food, relax: 2,000 calories is "only enough to sustain children and postmenopausal women."

Local Author To Discuss Making “Little Changes” for More Healthy Living At Franklin YMCA

Easton resident and author Kristi Marsh will discuss her book "Little Changes: Tales of a Reluctant Home Eco-momics Pioneer" on May 23rd at 7:30 pm in the Community Room at the Franklin YMCA. This free author meet and greet event is organized by the Franklin Newcomers and Friends Club.

Marsh, a breast cancer survivor, started trying to make better choices as she was recovering from treatment in 2007. Now a proponent for environmental health, Kristi is passionate about sharing her knowledge and journey with others. Her book discusses how to reduce the chemicals and toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis, from the foods we eat, the products we use on our bodies and the products we use to clean our homes. Marsh has a website, www.choosewiser.com, where she posts a weekly blog, and a Facebook page with relevant news links and highlights of natural and locally produced products.

On May 23rd, Marsh will speak about herself, her book and how she came about writing it. There will be time for questions, answers and discussion. She will also sell copies of her book and sign them for anyone interested. Admission is free. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available. This is expected to be a popular program and space is limited. To reserve your spot, please register by sending an email to franklinnewcomers@hotmail.com.

The Franklin Newcomers and Friends Club is a social and charitable club for new and long-time Franklin residents. The Club’s Annual Craft Fair held every November is a town tradition, and the club annually donates thousands of dollars to local charitable organizations.
