Franklin Food Pantry: Board Member Job Description

Our mission

The mission of the Franklin Food Pantry is to provide immediate hunger relief and healthy sustainable solutions by empowering our community through resources, education, and collaboration.

Our vision

We envision a community in which everyone has enough nutritious food and resources to move towards self-sufficiency.

Position

The Board of Directors will support the work of Franklin Food Pantry (FFP) and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by FFP’s Executive Director, the Board-Executive Director relationship is a collaborative partnership and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board member responsibilities include:
  • Leadership, governance and oversight
  • Serving as a trusted adviser to the Executive Director in partnership with the Board to develop and implement FFP’s strategic plan
  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by FFP for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics
  • Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
  • Approving the annual budget, audit reports, and relevant business decisions; being informed of and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Hire, monitor and evaluate the Executive Director
  • Assisting the Executive Director, board chair and governance committee in identifying and recruiting other Board members
  • Partnering with the Executive Director and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments as needed
  • Representing FFP to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
  • Ensuring FFP’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities that FFP serves

Fundraising

Board members will assume an active role in fund raising by providing leadership as well as soliciting donations to support the financial health of the organization and fulfill the Pantry’s mission.

Board members will consider FFP a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that FFP can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, FFP expects to have 100 percent of Board members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

Board terms/participation

FFP’s Board members will serve a three-year term and are eligible for additional three-year terms. Board meetings will be held monthly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings. Attendance at board meetings and participation on one or more committees is required.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about FFP’s mission and who has a track record of community engagement and leadership. Selected Board members will be respected in their professional fields and their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Professional experience with leadership accomplishments in the non-profit, human/social services, business, government, or philanthropy arenas; prior board services a plus
  • An understanding of the impact of hunger, food insecurity and poverty on individuals, families and the community
  • A natural affinity for cultivating relationships and building consensus among diverse individuals
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of FFP’s clients and our community

Service on FFP’s Board of Directors is without compensation outside of specific reimbursable expenses.
